P-MIS Port Management Information System for Piraeus Port Authority

INTRACOM, in a public international tender, was awarded by Piraeus Port Authority the implementation of its Port Management Information System (P-MIS). Piraeus is the largest Greek port and one of the busiest ports in Europe in terms of passenger and commercial traffic, operating 24-hours a day, 365 days per year. It is also very well placed in the international transport scene, especially due to its container traffic: an annual throughput of approximately 1.5 million TEUs has placed PP among the first 50 ports in container traffic worldwide.

PP is structured as a complex of terminals serving the need for imports and exports of various goods. The port services offered involve containers (Container Terminal), bulk cargo, such as metals & minerals, personal goods, car parts etc (Conventional Cargo Terminal), car imports (Car Terminal) and in general all the cargo to be distributed inland and overseas to third countries.

P-MIS had to take into account the size, volume and complexity of the PP (www.olp.gr.). It has literally changed the way day-to-day business is conducted in PP. Some of the system's features are:

  • Vessel, Rail, and Yard Operations Management

  • Hazardous Material Monitoring

  • Vessel Planning

  • Work Order Management

  • Equipment Control

  • Security through different access control levels

  • Localization

  • Integrated Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) support

  • Gate Operations Management

  • Invoicing

  • Car importing/ exporting (Car Terminal)

  • Statistics

The benefits of P-MIS operation were soon to be seen:

  • Better area usage, better resource management, better control of the port
    - Raise 21% in the traffic of the containers in the first year of the system operation and an extra 14.5 % during the second year. The total container traffic for year 2001 was 1.165.797 TEUs (Twenty Feet Equivalent Unit) while for year 2003 reached the 1.605.135 TEUs.
  • Better planning and security, optimisation of Container Handling Equipment and the Planners' productivity
    - Before P-MIS all positions of containers in the yard were marked down by hand. It was time consuming and extremely dangerous having staff in the yard and the information became soon obsolete. P-MIS has significantly improved velocity and visibility of cargo movement through port and inter-modal facilities.
  • Real Time Information
    - All movements of vehicles and cranes are recorded in real time something practically unthinkable before. The yard and vessel plans as well as the storage plan of containers are graphically depicted in real time.
    - INTRACOM's long term expertise in Port Management Information Systems and profound understanding of the maritime technologies has equipped it with the capability to offer its current and potential maritime trade customers services such as consulting, new product development, localization, installation and support.
